Dumbing Down the Jargon – SEO

Being IT illiterate, I, as I am sure many others, try to bluff my way through looking like I understand what everyone is telling me I have to do for my business.  For my website at the moment it is all about making sure I optimize SEO.

Dumbing it down to my language, search engine optimization (SEO) is about what you can do to improve the number and quality of traffic to your website from search engines (eg, Google, Bing etc).  Basically, when someone is looking for your product or service and searches on say Google, you are doing all you can with your website to try and get your name as close to the top of the results of that search.  Typically, the higher your site’s “page rank” (ie. the earlier it comes in the search results list), the more visitors it will receive from the search engine.

As a marketing strategy, SEO looks at how search engines work and what people are searching for and how they search. Optimizing a website primarily involves looking at the best way to present its content and ensuring sound HTML coding to respond to how people are searching for your products and/or services to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the activities of search engines.
