Cut to the Chase – How do I Social Media for My Business

Social Media BlogOk … message received … our businesses need to be on social media. We are set up on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Linkedin, 4 Square, Pinterest etc etc etc. Next step, how do we do it?

Online research resulted in lots and lots of advice. Know why you are doing this strategy. Generate interesting information. Have a purpose for each post. Do it regularly. Blah Blah Blah and we still don’t really know what we are doing. So the question posed to my colleagues at the Albany Creek Business Contacts this morning was – what do you actually do on social media that works for your business?

Our resident cyberspace guru Matthew Fox (Brisbane Hosting and Web Design) shared there are three reasons why businesses should be using social media:

  • Marketing and Brand Awareness
  • Direct Sales
  • Increase SEO

In relation to Marketing/Brand Awareness and Direct Sales, Tessa Stowe (Send Out Cards) summarised that social media is about building relationships so a starting point in relation to posts is to share who you are and what you are about. Tessa went on to share that in her experience she has found that each social media medium has its own audience type and, even if you are sharing the same information on each medium, you need to tailor your language and style for that medium, for example, communicating on Facebook is like at a barbeque where as Linkedin is like in the office.

Kirsty Newbery (Caring Cottage) added that she has had success with posts of anatomy pictures and explanation which are relevant to her services. Feedback to her is that readers have found the educational nature of the posts very positive.

Sandra Gilliman, commented that Streten Mason Lawyers (like Balanix Solutions), post up to date tips and information relevant to clients and prospective clients via blogs. Social media is used in these instances to notify interested people of the blogs and well as improve SEO (don’t worry, SEO will be discussed in more detail shortly). Sandra went on to say that posts are placed on the business page then staff share the information through personal pages to increase circulation. Sandra mentioned that if the person sharing the information was the author of the blog, then they tend to place a personal message to this effect in the post which friends tend to engage more with.

Andrew Gallagher (Lollyworld) echoed Kirsty’s and Sandra’s comments about posts (and pictures/videos) which are about your products or services that are of interest/educational/engaging to your audience. He went on to add that businesses also need to engage with comments made (that is, comment back) as you would do if talking with a group of people, face to face, when you interact with everyone contributing and responding to comments in the conversation.

OK, so, so far we know why we should be using social media, and generally, posts should be of interest to the audience in correct language and style suiting the medium. We should be posting relevant interesting information through posts, pictures, videos etc and engaging with others as we would in a face to face conversation. Now the SEO bit!

It was explained that social media can be used for SEO rather than social reasons. For the novice, SEO stands for Search engine optimization and is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic”) search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-specific vertical search engines.

In other words, SEO is about doing what you can to get your website as near to the top of the list in a Google or other search engine search without paying for it. The trick here with social media is to use links to your website in posts so Google and other search engines picks it up and indexes regularly. The more Google and other search engines index your page the higher it can rank. De Wet van der Nest (Express Air Con Cleaning, Kallangur) added that you should Google your website page all the time rather than use bookmark or quick link. This also helps with Google ranking.

This terrific information certainly has dumbed things down a bit more in relation to using social media for your business.

The last word belongs to Brad Davies (Conquest Pest & Termite Control) who commented that if this sort of thing is not your forte or you are just too time poor, outsource it to a professional who really knows what they are doing.

Happy social media-ing.

10 Must Dos to Engage Prospective Customers

"Career Planning for Jobs"Woody Allen once said, “70% of success in life is showing up.”

Whether we are presenting your self and your business one-on-one networking, presenting your business’s elevator pitch to a group, presenting your business in a showcase presentation or presenting your self and your business to a large audience at a conference, on social media or YouTube, here are the top ten must dos, generated by the business owners of the Albany Creek Business Contacts group, to position your self to maximise your success.

  1. Plan for Success. There is no point turning up to an occasion if you haven’t thought about why you are there and what you wish to achieve from being there. Even if posting a video on line, why are you doing it, what is the message you wish to convey, what do you wish to achieve, how do you know if it was worth the investment? Make sure you are clear on how you are going to differentiate your business from your competitors – know what you are going to say.
  2. Dress for Success. Dress appropriately for the occasion. Make sure cloths are ironed and presentable (eg, not ripped, have stains or droppings on them). If appropriate, wear your business’s uniform and/or a name badge.
  3. Avoid the Scatter Gun Card. Nothing disengages others than to have someone bombard and thrust business cards at them and then move on to the next unsuspecting victim. Make sure you present your card and engage in conversation with the person you give the card to. Isn’t it better to get 3-6 follow-up prospects than 50 “not a hope of anything”?
  4. Remember, it’s not just about you. Don’t dive right in to a marketing pitch about your business as soon as you are introduced to your audience (no matter whether a single individual or a large group). Take the time to find out about your audience and listen to what they tell you so you can tailor your response to solve their needs. Make eye contact and use positive body language to show you are genuine.
  5. Communication is person to person. As rightly pointed out in the discussion, there is no such thing as business to business communication. Communication is person to person. It is about how you connect with others and make them feel. If they don’t buy you then they won’t buy your product.
  6. Dumb down the Jargon. In every industry there is jargon, acronyms and common language. What might make sense to you and others in your industry may not mean the same to your audience (an example used was an event where the author was referring to QTC – the audience had a number of interpretations at their finger tips such as Queensland Treasury Corporation, Queensland Theatre Company, Queensland Turf Club and so on). Make sure you use a language and style your audience will understand.
  7. First Impressions can deceive. OK, hands up if you didn’t immediately connect with the person you are married to/is your partner? Our first impressions of our audience are not necessarily our lasting impression. Sometimes, we just don’t connect instantly. Seek common ground – find commonality through discussion to enable a relationship to be established and hopefully grow. Try the 3 Rule – within 3 seconds find one thing about the audience; in 30 seconds find out another thing and in 3 minutes determine how you can relate to the audience.
  8. Leave them wanting more. Remember, you don’t have to give everything to your audience in your first encounter. The intention is to tickle their interest sufficiently for them to want to know more. If possible, establish another meeting/appointment before parting to give another opportunity to build rapore and hopefully a long standing relationship.
  9. Honesty is the best policy. If you want your audience’s respect then you must show respect and honesty. Spin might sound good at the time but if your business can’t deliver then your reputation is shot. If you can’t solve their problem, say so – if possible refer to a colleague who can (hopefully they will return the favor).
  10. Turn Up. Don’t forget, you have to be in it to win it so put yourself and your business out there!

2MinuteTuesday – Kirsty Newbery

Caring Cottage Strathpine Brisbane North

Kirsty Newbery
Caring Cottage

Happy, health and well-being.  This local is all about feeling good.

My interest in business comes from  ….

I Love to help people feel better – my early years nursing taught me that a large portion of people coming into hospital were experiencing disease brought about by their choices with diet, lifestyle, and substance use. I was frustrated with working with people who wouldn’t take responsibility for their situation and wanted someone else to fix their problem. These days I get a lot of satisfaction from the time I spend with clients who value their health and well-being.

I made my first dollar  …

as a baker’s assistant (I suck at decorating cakes by the way)

If I wasn’t doing what I am currently doing I’d be ….

back at the hospital dishing out medications to really sick people.

My favourite song is  …

gosh there are so many. Currently it’s the ‘happy song’

The best read I’ve had was  …

the Cross-Stitch series

My best investment was  …

my education

My worst investment was  …

Can’t think of any – I took them all on as lessons learnt

The best advice I’ve been given is  …

“Don’t worry about the kids, they all come around by the time they’re in their mid twenties. You did.” – my dad.

My greatest achievement has been  …

my self education.

The question I’m most asked is  …

can you take a look at this….?

Caring Cottage can be found at 56 Hedge Street Strathpine and can assist you with taking care of your health, by listening carefully and offering a range of treatment modalities so that you can choose the one that suits you best.

Dumbing Down the Jargon – SEO

Dumbing down the JargonBeing IT illiterate, I, as I am sure many others, try to bluff my way through looking like I understand what everyone is telling me I have to do for my business.  For my website at the moment it is all about making sure I optimize SEO.

Dumbing it down to my language, search engine optimization (SEO) is about what you can do to improve the number and quality of traffic to your website from search engines (eg, Google, Bing etc).  Basically, when someone is looking for your product or service and searches on say Google, you are doing all you can with your website to try and get your name as close to the top of the results of that search.  Typically, the higher your site’s “page rank” (ie. the earlier it comes in the search results list), the more visitors it will receive from the search engine.

As a marketing strategy, SEO looks at how search engines work and what people are searching for and how they search. Optimizing a website primarily involves looking at the best way to present its content and ensuring sound HTML coding to respond to how people are searching for your products and/or services to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the activities of search engines.

It’s worth a conversation with a website guru to understand what you can do to maximise the SEO of your website.
